However, the concept of development can also have many other parameters namely, • Development as a process of economic growth, can be defined by increased commodity output, creation of more wealth and a rise in the levels of employment • Development as a process of socio-economic transformation in which economic growth triggers wider processes of change that alters the relationships between locations (particularly between developed and underdeveloped places) and between socio-economic groups – thereby creating fundamental shifts in patterns of production and consumption • Development as a process of spatial reorganization of people and areas of production. This may be viewed as a visible product of socio-economic transformations and is a common adjunct of tourism development, with its propensity to focus attention upon resources and resource areas that may previously have been idle or used sparingly
In geography, development studies traditionally tend to explore the particular problems of less developed states and their relationships with the developed world. Part of this tradition was also transferred to the geographic study of tourism, but it is important to note that the tourism development processes are also highly significant in states that would already be described as ‘developed’.
